What Is Answer Engine Optimization?
In simple terms, the idea behind answer engine optimization lies in the transformation and restructuring of online content for better generative AI exposure, i.e. so that it’s more likely to be included in responses to consumers’ questions and queries, provided by AI-driven search and answer engine tools, like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews, for instance.
The basis of effective AEO primarily involves structuring of online content via the implementation of schema markup to ensure that LLMs clearly understand its context and efficiently process it. This, in particular, includes content transformation based on natural consumers’ queries and questions in a more conversational style, instead of focusing on keyword density, as it was with SEO.
AEO vs. GEO
Both answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO) work as somewhat complementary tactics to increase content visibility in AI-driven search engines.
Namely, while GEO focuses on the publisher’s reputation and trust with generative AI tools, AEO targets the more short-term outcomes, like content visibility in AI-generated summaries and responses to direct consumers’ questions and queries. In view of this, AEO tactics primarily focus on the optimization and transformation of specific content sections, e.g. product descriptions, reviews and FAQs, to increase the likelihood of being cited by generative AI-based search tools.
Benefits vs. Limitations of AEO
While the accelerating popularity of AI-driven search makes it crucial to ensure online content visibility to generative AI models, AEO still remains a more or less experimental content strategy, given the lack of understanding of the existing LLM ranking and summarizing algorithms, which happen to update rather frequently.
In this respect, a potentially efficient approach to AEO is to try out restructuring specific content sections, then adjust and optimize along the way.
